PROJECT 2 : HOUSE OF LEISURE - COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTRE

Task One: Furthering the exploration of ‘Leisure and Architecture’, the project calls for the design of a House of Leisure - Community Recreation Center within an urban park environment. Students are required to provide full design proposals incorporating findings from precedent study and site analysis. Students will generate concepts that respond to context and leisure related programs and explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing clustered spatial typology and passive design strategies. The design should contribute to and merge harmoniously with the context and provide interesting spatial experience for the users through sensitive and thoughtful architectural intervention.

Based on each own tutorial group, we are to first analyse our site - Taman D.R. Seenivasagam, Ipoh. Before we start to design, we have a site visit to this park and analyse the site accordingly. We look into the park's history, circulation, climate, vegetation, demography, views and vistas in order to come out with design considerations on which programme is suitable for the house of leisure designed.

Final Site Analysis Presentation:

Task Two: The design for the House of Leisure must take into consideration the activities and social life already existing on site, and contribute in meaningful ways to its context. The design must be based on a multi-layered understanding of contextual issues and weave together sustainable environmental strategies and user and programmatic needs into poetic architectural spaces.

Initial Idea:

In my case, I realize that there are specific permanent venue for each activities, eg: football field for football, playground for kids, skating park for skaters, etc. But, only one type of user groups has no specific designated place for them, which are those who play Tai Chi, traditional fan dance, Wu Shu, etc. Meanwhile, I think that if I create a space for them to practice, it wouldn't work because they surely have sentimental values towards their practice venue, they are here since years ago. They wouldn't want to move no matter how you force them.

My thought continues.

Everyday, they practice here. But it just somehow lacks of something. Something... with sense of achievement! What if I create a space for them to perform? If all those traditional performances can be combined and become a cultural night, that would be awesome!
