PROJECT 1 : RESEARCH IN ASIAN ARCHITECTURE

Task One: The project is research driven that requires student to research and discuss significant issues to generate a critical understanding of tradition, modernity and globalisation in the Asian architectural contexts. These issues are discussed in lectures and pre-recorded lectures to facilitate students’ group discussion in class. Students are required to present their findings in the form of a research poster and seminar presentation.

Out of the options, we have selected modernity in asian architecture as our research study. For the buildings, we have selected Parkroyal on Pickering in Singapore.

Reflection: The first research project we had offers insights to a building's energy efficiency challenges from an architect's perspective, while utilising research skills to find out the evidences that prove its workability in its context. It was an eye-opening experience as the research provided me a more in-depth knowledge and understanding on sustaining the vertical greenery system in a high-rise, especially its low surviving possibility in tropical climate context makes it harder to be efficient. However, with the information gathered from reviewed literature, the research again proves us that the strategies implied in maintaining vertical urban garden works to achieve energy efficiency through sustainability. Not forget to mention, teamwork also plays a vital part in making this research a successful one. Without the hard work from everyone in the group, we wouldn't progress on time and complete the project.

PROJECT 2 : CONTEXTUAL ARCHITECTURE STUDY

Task Two: The Contextual Architecture Study project requires students to analyse how the selected architectural design responded to its contexts. Findings from the study is presented in the form of A2 presentation visual. The objectives include to integrate architectural design and research through a specific case study, supporting students’ design through extensive research within the framework of Contextual Architecture in Asia.

Reflection: When it comes to contextual architecture study in project 2, I realize it somehow relates to our core design studio project - how can a building design respond to the site contextually. The research and findings make me eye-opening due to the strict regulations set by Kyoto government to remain the existing scenery of the mountains - the key cultural aspect of Kyoto. And that eventually forms the Nishinomaya House which shows a clear relationship with its surrounding context. Also, it definitely helps me a lot in understanding the importance of responding to the site and context, be it demographics, skyline, natural elements, or programme, during my design studio final project.
