BUILDING MATERIALS

This module intends to inform the student of the relevant visual and physical properties of a wide range of building materials. It also encompasses the broad environmental debate by including energy saving and recycled materials. For each material, the module describes the manufacturing process, salient properties and typical uses of these materials, with the aim of ensuring their appropriate application within the awareness of the suitability of the physical and chemical properties as well as its ecological impact.

PROJECT 1 : FAMOUS ARCHITECT

Building materials vary in building construction. The choice of materials used is important in order to distinguish the appearance of a particular buildings. This project is designed as an introduction to building materials that are universally used in the construction industry. Hence, students are required to choose any one of the 'famous architect' together with the architect's building as a case study. This exercise aims in helping the students to explore and understand the building materials in terms of its characters, properties and its impact to the building design in general.

Task: In a group of 3, we are required to conduct a case study on WTC Path Station which is designed by the famous architect, Santiago Calatrava. We are required to provide information on minimum three of the materials used, characteristics of the materials and suitability of the materials.

PROJECT 2 : 'FORM, SPACE & PATTERN EXPERIENTIAL EXPLORATION'

This assignment is designed to introduce building materials that are commonly used in the construction industry. The spaces or building selected to study will allow one to understand the reasoning behind choices made by architects / designers in terms of concepts, functions, environmental response, structural requirement, availability of resources and etc. when selecting or proposing building materials for the building design.

Task: In a group of 6, we are required to conduct a case study on Point 92 or Menara Obyu. For group work, we are required to produce a brief introduction of the selected building and reason for selecting the space, a mood board, identification of the materials used and application of the materials. For individual work, I have to study the sense of materiality (experimental analysis of the relationship between material and space) of a selected space withi Point 92 which is the entrance lobby.

REFLECTION

Through this module, I get to know various types of building materials used in current construction practice. Also I have the opportunity to take famous architects in the world as an example to see how the translation of idea into design works together with the choice of materials as well as the suitability of materials. Different materials have different properties and they give different sense of feeling to the spaces as well as to the users. Overall, it is a great platform for me to explore more about the choice of building materials which designers frequently use based on the properties of the materials.
