BUILDING CONSTRUCTION I

This module is the first part of building construction modules. It intends to develop the understanding of the principles and practices of construction technology in relation to site, building components 'below ground', foundation, 'on ground', floor and staircase, beam and column, wall and opening and 'above ground', roof and ceiling.

PROJECT 1 : EXPERIENCING CONSTRUCTION

The aim of Project 1 is to expose and introduce us as students to various construction elements by visiting construction sites. It also intends to enhance the understanding of principles of construction, sequence of construction activities, importance of basic detailing, construction joints and material application through real life projects. It also creates an opportunity to study the relationship between site and construction method.

Task: In a group of 6, we were required to select an ongoing construction site which visibly demonstrates most of the subject topics covered in the syllabus. The sites should be medium rise or low rise buildings. We were to identify different types of building elements and its construction process, details and materials. All information are required to be recorded in a report in A3 format.

PROJECT 2 : CONSTRUCTION DETAILS & SPECIFICATIONS

This project involves understanding of the construction details and specifications of a simple building that is made out of steel and/or timber. Meanwhile this project is designed to allow the application of knowledge of construction details and specifications into students' design.

Task: We are asked to find and analyse the construction of a 2-storey or 3-storey residential building where we need to identify and propose only two (2) construction details for the selected elements of the building: wall, door, window, slab, staircase or roof. The construction method must consist use of either timber, steel, concrete or composite material shown in the section and details of the drawings. All drawings must include the appropriate specifications, symbols, dimensions and the proposed materials clearly.
