ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO II

Architectural Design Studio 2 introduces the principles and methods of analysis, abstraction, and synthesis in design thinking that are common to many design fields, including building and architecture. The key emphasis of this studio is “User and Context”, which investigates the relationship between user and natural environment.

PROJECT 1 : FAMOUS ARCHITECTS, FABULOUS HOUSES

This project requires us as students to investigate how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics - solid, planes, lines and frames. Upon completion, we should be able to achieve a level of understanding on the works assigned and will be able to apply the idea and concept in the subsequent project. Meanwhile the idea of using pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea would also be in cooperated into this assignment.

Task: In a group of six, we are required to select a building from the given list and produce a complete set of architectural drawings (scale 1:100) as well as 10 analysis diagrams and diagrammatic models in 8 x 8 x 8 cm. The building chosen is the Louvrebox House, Kuala Lumpur which is designed by the architect Kevin Mark Low.

PROJECT 2 : TEA PAVILION

The aim of Project 2 is to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation by which we are required to choose 2 ‘keywords’ from Project 1, with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. We as students will be shown the importance of using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool as part of the design process.

Task: In a group of two, we are to design a tea pavilion with a maximum volume of 30m3 at Cameron Valley tea plantation site, Cameron Highlands. This tea pavilion shall include the activities of preparing, drinking, relaxing, meditating etc, in which furniture and equipment must fit and be incorporated with spatial planning. This structure should correspond to the site that we have chosen. Adequate access, circulation and fenestration are mandatory.

PROJECT 3 : WEEKEND LODGING

This final project aims to introduce the notions of concepts, program and process in architectural design as well as the understanding of user specific design requirements. Besides it introduces the notions of space, form and function in architectural design and awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis.

Task: We as students are to further develop our tea Pavilion project into a weekend lodging at Cameron Valley Tea House, Cameron Highlands. This weekend lodging must function as habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, showering, cooking, storage and such within the built up space of 150 m2. The relationship between our design and the context is also important in making the weekend lodging unique to its landscape and activity.
